How many clothes does a newborn actually need?
New parents consistently overbuy newborn clothing — and understandably so. But babies grow incredibly fast in those first weeks. As a practical guide:
- 6–8 sleepsuits or onesies
- 4–6 vests or bodysuits
- 2–3 complete outfits for going out
- 2–3 cardigans or lightweight jackets
- 1–2 hats (essential for temperature regulation)
- 3–4 pairs of scratch mitts
- 2–3 pairs of booties or soft shoes
The newborn clothing checklist
Sleepsuits and onesies
The newborn wardrobe workhorse. Look for front-opening poppers or zip fastenings that make nappy changes easier at 3am. Soft cotton or cotton-blend fabrics are gentlest on newborn skin.
Vests and bodysuits
Worn under sleepsuits or as a base layer, vests are essential. Envelope necklines are a lifesaver for those blowout moments — they pull down rather than over the head.
Going-out outfits

Layering pieces

- 100% cotton or organic cotton — gentle on sensitive newborn skin
- Avoid synthetic fabrics — they don't breathe as well and can irritate delicate skin
- Easy-care — machine washable at 40°C is essential; you'll be washing constantly
- No scratchy labels — look for printed labels or tagless designs
